Windeatts Solicitors appointed Broadbase to transform the former Lloyds Bank on Fore Street, Kingsbridge, into a contemporary new home for their practice.
Having been unoccupied for some time, the building required considerably more than a conventional office fit-out. Significant damp and associated deterioration had affected areas of the building, requiring extensive remedial works before the new workplace could take shape.
As existing finishes were stripped back, further areas requiring attention became apparent. The challenge was to address the underlying condition of the building while creating a modern workplace that met the practical needs of the Windeatts team and provided a welcoming, professional environment for clients.
The former bank also had several original features that presented a unique design opportunity. Rather than erase the building’s history, we wanted to retain its character as part of the transformation.
Building Restoration
Extensive remedial works were carried out to address the building’s damp and deterioration. Removing the old suspended ceilings revealed original architectural details and architraves, which were carefully restored and incorporated into the new design.
Interior Design
New rooflights were introduced to increase natural daylight, while the removal of the old ceilings and a fresh decorative scheme helped create a brighter, more open and welcoming workplace.
Repurposing Original Features
Original security glass from the former teller positions was retained and repurposed to create a bespoke table. The former bank strong room was also transformed into a Partner’s office, retaining many of its original features, including the heavy vault door, original wall finishes, two large safes and floor-to-ceiling security bars. These details preserve a tangible connection to the building’s history while giving the new office a distinctive character.
Furniture & Project Delivery
New finishes and furniture were introduced throughout, creating a cohesive and functional environment across the working, meeting and client-facing areas. Broadbase coordinated the refurbishment and fit-out, working closely with Windeatts and the appointed contractors throughout.
The Result
The former bank has been transformed into a bright, contemporary workplace that meets the needs of Windeatts Solicitors while retaining the character of the original building. By restoring and repurposing key features, the refurbishment has given this prominent building a new lease of life.
